Argument Injection in PHP-CGI

Some Windows PHP-CGI deployments can interpret specially encoded request data as PHP options. The publisher reports possible code execution or source disclosure. The deployed PHP release, CGI invocation and Windows codepage all matter.

source listedactiveCVE-2024-4577

This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.

01 / Meaning

Why it matters

A request-parsing boundary can affect how PHP is invoked. Check the published affected releases and configuration prerequisites, then use current vendor guidance and verify the deployed change. The presence of a vulnerable version is not evidence that exploitation occurred.

02 / Applicability

The affected context

Affected versions, configuration prerequisites and known exclusions are public. Confirm each one against the deployed service.

PHP

source listed
  • 8.1.* to <8.1.29
  • 8.2.* to <8.2.20
  • 8.3.* to <8.3.8

The CNA describes Apache invoking PHP-CGI on Windows with certain codepages and Best-Fit character conversion. Confirm all these conditions on the deployed service. This report cannot infer the operating system, web-server invocation or codepage from a package version alone.

03 / Response

What to do next

  1. vendor patch

The CNA lists historical first-fixed boundaries 8.1.29, 8.2.20, 8.3.8. Select a currently supported vendor release and verify the affected configuration.

Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. CVE Program / attributed CNA and ADP

  2. investigate

Apply mitigations per vendor instructions or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable.

Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. CISA

  3. investigate

Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.

Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. FIRST EPSS

A fixed release is not deployment evidence.

Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.

Which conditions are worth checking?

This is a preliminary orientation to this advisory. It does not inspect anything, issue a finding, verify a fix or establish that a system is safe. Answers are neither submitted nor saved.

04 / Limits

What this report cannot establish

  • Customer inventory, deployment, reachability and exploitation have not been inspected.
  • CISA catalog date-added and due-date fields are not the original vulnerability disclosure date or universal legal deadlines.
  • NVD lastModified does not establish freshness of every associated CPE record.
