Froxlor has Admin-to-Root Privilege Escalation via Input Validation Bypass + OS Command Injection
OSV carries this publisher advisory for froxlor/froxlor. This is an aggregated source copy; consult the original publisher and compare update dates.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.

froxlor/froxlor
source listedECOSYSTEM: introduced 0; fixed 2.3.4
## Summary A typo in Froxlor's input validation code (`==` instead of `=`) completely disables email format checking for all settings fields declared as email type. This allows an authenticated admin to store arbitrary strings — including shell metacharacters — in the `panel.adminmail` setting. This value is later concatenated into a shell command executed as **root** by a cron job, where the pipe character `|` is explicitly whitelisted. The result is **full root-level Remote Code Execution**. --- ## Why This Is a Security Vulnerability (Not Just "Admin Using Admin Features") Froxlor is a **shared hosting control panel**. In production deployments: 1. **Admin panel access does not equal root access.** Hosting providers assign the Froxlor admin role to staff who manage customer accounts, domains, and services through the web UI. These operators are not given SSH access or root shell on the underlying server. The boundary between "panel admin" and "OS root" is a deliberate security design. 2. **Froxlor itself enforces this boundary.** The `safe_exec()` function (FileDir.php:224-264) exists specifically to prevent shell injection — it blocks `;`, `|`, `&`, `>`, `<`, `` ` ``, `$`

What to do next
- vendor patch
The original advisory lists fixed boundaries 2.3.4 for froxlor/froxlor. Confirm the publisher’s latest guidance.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. GitHub Advisory Database via OSV
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. FIRST EPSS
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.

- Customer inventory, deployment, reachability and exploitation have not been inspected.
- NVD lastModified does not establish freshness of every associated CPE record.
