vulnerability / NVI-00005940 / Revision 4
Semantic MediaWiki'a missing authorization in the smwtask API module allows unauthenticated access to admin-only maintenance tasks
GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for mediawiki/semantic-media-wiki. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.

### Summary The `api.php?action=smwtask` API module performs no authorization check. The equivalent maintenance interface in the web UI (`Special:SMWAdmin`) requires the `smw-admin` right, but the API module that backs several of the same operations enforces nothing. An unauthenticated visitor can therefore retrieve internal Semantic MediaWiki database statistics and reach state-changing maintenance operations that are intended to be administrator-only. ### Details `SMW\MediaWiki\Api\Task::execute()` (`src/MediaWiki/Api/Task.php`) reads the request parameters, resolves a task through `TaskFactory`, and runs it. It contains no permission check — no `smw-admin`, no `checkUserRightsAny()`, no per-task right. The only gates on the module are: - `needsToken( 'csrf' )` — this is **not** authorization. MediaWiki issues anonymous users a fixed, public CSRF token (`+\`), so any unauthenticated caller satisfies the token check. It defends logged-in users against CSRF; it does nothing against a direct anonymous request. - `mustBePosted()` / `isWriteMode()` — do not gate on group membership. By contrast, `Special:SMWAdmin` restricts access via `parent::__construct( 'SMWAdmin', 'smw-admin

What to do next
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. FIRST EPSS
- vendor patch
The original advisory lists fixed boundaries 7.3.0 for mediawiki/semantic-media-wiki. Confirm the publisher’s latest guidance.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. GitHub Advisory Database via OSV
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
