PHPMailer untrusted code may be run from an overridden address validator
OSV carries this publisher advisory for phpmailer/phpmailer. This is an aggregated source copy; consult the original publisher and compare update dates.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.

phpmailer/phpmailer
source listedECOSYSTEM: introduced 0; fixed 6.5.0
If a function is defined that has the same name as the default built-in email address validation scheme (`php`), it will be called in default configuration as when no validation scheme is provided, the default scheme's callable `php` was being called. If an attacker is able to inject such a function into the application (a much bigger issue), it will be called whenever an email address is validated, such as when calling `validateAddress()`. ### Impact Low impact – exploitation requires that an attacker can already inject code into an application, but it provides a trigger pathway. ### Patches This is patched in PHPMailer 6.5.0 by denying the use of simple strings as validator function names, which is a very minor BC break. ### Workarounds Inject your own email validator function. ### References Reported by Vikrant Singh Chauhan via huntr.dev. What to do next
- vendor patch
The original advisory lists fixed boundaries 6.5.0 for phpmailer/phpmailer. Confirm the publisher’s latest guidance.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. GitHub Advisory Database via OSV
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. FIRST EPSS
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
