Atlantis: OS command injection through PR-controlled Terraform workspace enables RCE during plan
GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for github.com/runatlantis/atlantis. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.

### Summary Atlantis passes the Terraform `workspace` value from a pull request's `atlantis.yaml` into a shell command without quoting or escaping it. A contributor whose pull request is eligible for an Atlantis plan can include shell metacharacters in the workspace name and execute arbitrary commands as the Atlantis service account. This does not require custom workflows, `allow_custom_workflows`, or permission to run `terraform apply`. The executed command inherits the Atlantis process environment, which commonly contains cloud-provider, Terraform, and VCS credentials. ### Details Verified against current `upstream/main` commit `92ce5c51d1a050357e44df3535483425e59fa984` on August 13, 2026. The vulnerable data flow is: 1. The PR-controlled project workspace is validated in `server/core/config/raw/project.go`. Validation rejects only `..`, `/`, and `\`. Shell metacharacters such as `;`, `#`, `$`, redirections, and whitespace remain permitted. 2. The workspace is passed directly as a Terraform command argument in [`server/core/runtime/works

What to do next
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. FIRST EPSS
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
04 / Limits
What this report cannot establish
- Customer inventory, deployment, reachability and exploitation have not been inspected.
- NVD lastModified does not establish freshness of every associated CPE record.
05 / Provenance
Sources you can inspect
Each assertion retains its source. Mirrored records may repeat one underlying publisher; additional links are not independent corroboration.
