Echo has CSRF Protection Bypass via MethodOverride Rewriting POST to Safe Method
GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for github.com/labstack/echo/v5, github.com/labstack/echo/v4. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.
01 / Meaning
Why it matters
Published affected context helps an owner decide what evidence to gather. This report has not examined your application.

## Summary The `MethodOverride` middleware accepts any non-empty string as the override target method — including safe methods (GET, HEAD, OPTIONS, TRACE) — when rewriting a POST request. When `MethodOverride` is registered before `CSRF` in the post-routing middleware chain (`e.Use()`), it rewrites the request method to a safe method before `CSRF` evaluates it. The CSRF middleware then skips token validation for the now-safe method, allowing state-changing POST handlers to execute without any CSRF check. Both the legacy token path and the modern `Sec-Fetch-Site` protection path are bypassed simultaneously. ## Affected Component - `middleware/method_override.go` — `MethodOverrideConfig.ToMiddleware()` (lines 55–71): no whitelist on the override target method - `middleware/csrf.go` — `CSRFConfig.ToMiddleware()` (lines 188–189): safe-method bypass branch reads the already-rewritten method - `middleware/csrf.go` — `checkSecFetchSiteRequest()` (line 283): `Sec-Fetch-Site` safe check also reads the rewritten method ## Description ### MethodOverride accepts safe methods as override targets `MethodOverrideConfig.ToMiddleware()` (`method_override.go:55-71`) restricts the **source** me

What to do next
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. FIRST EPSS
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
04 / Limits
What this report cannot establish
- Customer inventory, deployment, reachability and exploitation have not been inspected.
- NVD lastModified does not establish freshness of every associated CPE record.
05 / Provenance
Sources you can inspect
Each assertion retains its source. Mirrored records may repeat one underlying publisher; additional links are not independent corroboration.
