vulnerability / NVI-00010611 / Revision 4
multer vulnerable to Denial of Service via a pending asynchronous fileFilter after request teardown
GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for multer. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.

The affected context
Affected versions, configuration prerequisites and known exclusions are public. Confirm each one against the deployed service.
multer
source listed>= 2.0.0, < 2.5.0
### Impact When `multer` is configured with an asynchronous `fileFilter`, a single request can crash the Node.js process. If a request is aborted (for example when one file is rejected) while another file's async `fileFilter` is still pending, the pending callback later resumes a parsing stream that multer has already torn down. busboy then emits an error on a stream that no longer has an error listener, which Node raises as an unhandled `'error'` event, and the process exits. A single unauthenticated request is enough, so any application using `multer` with an asynchronous `fileFilter` is affected, regardless of storage engine. Uploads using a synchronous `fileFilter` are not affected. ### Patches Users should upgrade to `multer` `2.5.0` or later. ### Workarounds Use a synchronous `fileFilter`.

What to do next
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. FIRST EPSS
- vendor patch
The original advisory lists fixed boundaries 2.5.0 for multer. Confirm the publisher’s latest guidance.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. GitHub Advisory Database via OSV
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
