vulnerability / NVI-00010662 / Revision 3
virtualenv: Builtin creation follows linked environment directories
GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for virtualenv. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.

## Summary The builtin creator accepts existing directory symlinks through ensure_dir() and writes environment files through those directories. This permits writes outside the requested destination. Anthropic's OSS Scanner reported this as `ANT-2026-MUFJEG11` in `virtualenv-20261015-005`, received on 15 October 2026. ## Affected area Directory preparation before environment files are created. ## Attacker-controlled input Another account must be able to prepare linked entries below the chosen destination before creation. The invoking user must have access to the linked destination. This does not require write access to the target itself under the other account. ## Affected code The relevant 21.14.8 source is in builtin creator, ensure_dir(). ## Mechanism The builtin creator calls `ensure_dir()` for `bin`, `lib`, and package directories. `ensure_dir()` accepts an existing symlink to a directory because `exists

What to do next
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. FIRST EPSS
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
04 / Limits
What this report cannot establish
- Customer inventory, deployment, reachability and exploitation have not been inspected.
- NVD lastModified does not establish freshness of every associated CPE record.
05 / Provenance
Sources you can inspect
Each assertion retains its source. Mirrored records may repeat one underlying publisher; additional links are not independent corroboration.
