Kiota: Code injection through doc-comment delimiter reformation in Kiota Java and PHP generators
GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for Microsoft.OpenApi.Kiota, Microsoft.OpenApi.Kiota.Builder. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.
01 / Meaning
Why it matters
Published affected context helps an owner decide what evidence to gather. This report has not examined your application.
8.8 high
GitHub source severity; exploitability and local consequence require separate evidence.
As of · GitHub Advisory Database

02 / Applicability
The affected context
Affected versions, configuration prerequisites and known exclusions are public. Confirm each one against the deployed service.
Microsoft.OpenApi.Kiota
source listed>= 0.5.0, < 1.35.0
### Impact An attacker who controls or tampers with an OpenAPI description can cause Kiota to emit attacker-controlled Java or PHP source outside a generated documentation comment. The affected sanitizers remove comment terminators rather than neutralizing them, allowing a terminator to reform from overlapping characters or from subsequent normalization. The Java sanitizer also removes non-ASCII characters after removing terminators, which can create a new terminator. Exploitation requires a developer or build pipeline to generate a client from the malicious description and subsequently compile and load the Java output, or load the PHP output. Code executes in the consuming application's or build environment's security context, not merely because Kiota reads the description. ### Affected versions The affected NuGet packages are `Microsoft.OpenApi.Kiota` and `Microsoft.OpenApi.Kiota.Builder`. The Java normalization-order defect was introduced in version 0.5.0 and remains present through version 1.34.1, including the separate 1.29.1 security-backport release. The PHP delimiter-reformation variant is also present in version 1.34.1 and 1.29.1. Version 1.35.0 fixes both variants. T

03 / Response
What to do next
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. FIRST EPSS
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.

- Customer inventory, deployment, reachability and exploitation have not been inspected.
05 / Provenance
Sources you can inspect
Each assertion retains its source. Mirrored records may repeat one underlying publisher; additional links are not independent corroboration.
