vm2: GHSA-m283-3h24-438v fix bypass leads to host RCE via call/apply indirection
GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for vm2. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.

## Summary Untrusted JavaScript run by vm2 can escape the sandbox and execute arbitrary commands in the host Node.js process when an embedder-exposed host Promise rejects. This is an incomplete fix for GHSA-m283-3h24-438v: the advisory's capability-bearing rejection rebuild runs only through this direct Promise-handler path, so call/apply indirection bypasses the protection it introduced. The bridge sanitises host rejection values before sandbox callbacks run, but the gate at `lib/bridge.js:1624` identity-checks only the direct call target. Registering the rejection handler through `Function.prototype.call` indirection, `p.then.call(p, undefined, cb)`, makes the intercepted target host `Function.prototype.call`, so the sanitiser never runs and the raw host error reaches the sandbox (`lib/bridge.js:1639`) without the rebuild that strips host references carried by its own properties (`lib/setup-sandbox.js:2104`). A rejection error whose own property references a powerful host object, for example `err.detail = process`, therefore reaches sandbox code as a fully functional proxy, and `e.detail.mainModule.require('child_process').execSync(...)` executes with host privileges. What to do next
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. NIST National Vulnerability Database
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
