xmldom: Quadratic-memory consumption
GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for @xmldom/xmldom, @xmldom/xmldom, xmldom. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.
01 / Meaning
Why it matters
Published affected context helps an owner decide what evidence to gather. This report has not examined your application.

## Summary When an element declares a namespace prefix, xmldom copies the entire in-scope namespace map into a fresh object and keeps that copy on the element while it is open on the parse stack. A crafted document that nests N elements, each declaring one unique prefix, therefore drives the parser to hold on the order of N(N+1)/2 = **O(N²) namespace-map entries at its peak**, so a small, highly compressible input exhausts the heap. Parsing runs under default options on untrusted, network-delivered XML, so a sub-megabyte payload can OOM-crash the process before any application-level validation runs — an unauthenticated denial of service. ## Details `appendElement` performs the copy: `_copy` clones the current namespace map into a fresh object for each prefix-declaring element, and the copy is retained on that element's parse-stack entry: ```js if (localNSMap == null) { localNSMap = Object.create(null); _copy(currentNSMap, (currentNSMap = Object.create(null))); // full copy of all ancestor prefixes } currentNSMap[nsPrefix] = localNSMap[nsPrefix] = value; ... el.currentNSMap = currentNSMap; // retained while the element is open on the parse stack ``` https://github.c

03 / Response
What to do next
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. FIRST EPSS
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
04 / Limits
What this report cannot establish
- Customer inventory, deployment, reachability and exploitation have not been inspected.
05 / Provenance
Sources you can inspect
Each assertion retains its source. Mirrored records may repeat one underlying publisher; additional links are not independent corroboration.
