This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.

01 / Meaning

Why it matters

Published affected context helps an owner decide what evidence to gather. This report has not examined your application.

CVSS

8.8 high

GitHub source severity; exploitability and local consequence require separate evidence.

## Description KubeEdge ConfigUpdateJob processing was vulnerable to command injection on edge nodes. The `updateFields` values from a ConfigUpdateJob were concatenated into a command string and executed through a system shell. An authenticated user with sufficient permissions to create or update ConfigUpdateJob resources could include shell metacharacters in the supplied configuration fields and cause unintended commands to be executed on targeted edge nodes. ## Impact Successful exploitation could allow an authenticated attacker to execute arbitrary commands on affected edge nodes with the privileges of the KubeEdge process handling the ConfigUpdateJob. The attacker must already have permission to create or modify ConfigUpdateJob resources and target an enrolled edge node. ## Patches The fix removes shell-based command construction and invokes `keadm config-update` using structured command arguments. The complete `--set` value is passed as a single literal argument, preventing shell metacharacters from being interpreted as commands. Fixes are planned for the following maintained releases: * v1.23.1 * v1.22.2 * v1.21.2 ## Workarounds Until a patched release is availabl

03 / Response

What to do next

  1. investigate

Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.

Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. GitHub Advisory Database

A fixed release is not deployment evidence.

Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
