This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.

01 / Meaning

Why it matters

Published affected context helps an owner decide what evidence to gather. This report has not examined your application.

CVSS

6.5 medium

GitHub source severity; exploitability and local consequence require separate evidence.

Affected versions, configuration prerequisites and known exclusions are public. Confirm each one against the deployed service.

org.http4k:http4k-security-digest

source listed
  • >= 5.0.0.0, < 5.42.0.0

### Impact An issue in `DigestAuthProvider.verify`: **Algorithm silently forced to MD5.** The configured `algorithm` parameter was ignored — every verification used MD5 regardless of configuration. Deployments believing they were running SHA-256 Digest auth were silently inheriting MD5's collision weaknesses, including documented attack paths against Digest schemes that rely on the hash being collision-resistant. **Who is affected:** any application using `http4k-security-digest` for HTTP Digest authentication. The bug has been present since `DigestAuthProvider` was introduced (commit `8a52b615b1`, 2021). ### Patches | Line | Fixed in | Edition | |------|----------|---------| | v6.x (Community) | **6.50.0.0** | Community | | v5.x (LTS) | **5.42.0.0** | Enterprise — contact enterprise@http4k.org (if Digest auth is present in your v5.x line) | | v4.x (LTS) | **4.51.0.0** | Enterprise — contact enterprise@http4k.org (if Digest auth is present in your v4.x line) | The fix: - Hashes with the configured `algorithm` instead of hardcoded MD5. ### Workarounds For deployments that cannot upgrade immediately: - **Algorit

03 / Response

What to do next

  1. investigate

    Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.

    Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. GitHub Advisory Database

A fixed release is not deployment evidence.

Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
