MobSF Vulnerable to Arbitrary File Read via Path Traversal in ZIP Uploads
GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for mobsf. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.
01 / Meaning
Why it matters
Published affected context helps an owner decide what evidence to gather. This report has not examined your application.
5.5 medium

### Summary The `find_icon_path_zip()` function in MobSF does not properly sanitize the `android:icon` attribute extracted from an Android manifest before resolving it as a filesystem path. An attacker can supply a malicious `android:icon` value containing path traversal sequences, causing MobSF to read arbitrary files from the server filesystem and copy them into the downloads directory (`DWD_DIR`). These files can then be retrieved by any authenticated user via the `/download/` endpoint, provided the file extension is included in `ALLOWED_EXTENSIONS`. ### Details ``` elif icon_path.startswith(('res/', '/res/')): stripped_relative_path = icon_path.strip('/res') # Works for neither /res nor res full_path = os.path.join(res_dir, stripped_relative_path) if os.path.exists(full_path): return full_path full_path += '.png' if os.path.exists(full_path): return full_path ``` https://github.com/MobSF/Mobile-Security-Framework-MobSF/blob/6e875fb77baa9dbe65ff8e7d0344d740e1d6d51e/mobsf/StaticAnalyzer/views/android/icon_analysis.py#L126 This code enables path traversal if a value like 'res/../../../signatures/maltrail-malware-domains.txt' is use
03 / Response
What to do next
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. GitHub Advisory Database
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
04 / Limits
What this report cannot establish
- Customer inventory, deployment, reachability and exploitation have not been inspected.
05 / Provenance
Sources you can inspect
Each assertion retains its source. Mirrored records may repeat one underlying publisher; additional links are not independent corroboration.
