vulnerability / NVI-00016054 / Revision 2
vLLM affected by RCE via auto_map dynamic module loading during model initialization
GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for vllm. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.
01 / Meaning
Why it matters
Published affected context helps an owner decide what evidence to gather. This report has not examined your application.
8.8 high
GitHub source severity; exploitability and local consequence require separate evidence.

# Summary vLLM loads Hugging Face `auto_map` dynamic modules during model resolution **without gating on `trust_remote_code`**, allowing attacker-controlled Python code in a model repo/path to execute at server startup. --- # Impact An attacker who can influence the model repo/path (local directory or remote Hugging Face repo) can achieve **arbitrary code execution** on the vLLM host during model load. This happens **before any request handling** and does **not require API access**. --- # Affected Versions All versions where `vllm/model_executor/models/registry.py` resolves `auto_map` entries with `try_get_class_from_dynamic_module` **without checking `trust_remote_code`** (at least current `main`). --- # Details During model resolution, vLLM unconditionally iterates `auto_map` entries from the model config and calls `try_get_class_from_dynamic_module`, which delegates to Transformers’ `get_class_from_dynamic_module` and **executes the module code**. This occurs even when `trust_remote_code` is `false`, allowing a malicious model repo to embed code in a referenced module and have it executed during initialization. ### Relevant code - `vllm/model_executor/models/regis
03 / Response
What to do next
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. NIST National Vulnerability Database
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
04 / Limits
What this report cannot establish
- Customer inventory, deployment, reachability and exploitation have not been inspected.
- NVD lastModified does not establish freshness of every associated CPE record.

Sources you can inspect
Each assertion retains its source. Mirrored records may repeat one underlying publisher; additional links are not independent corroboration.
