djust: A template binding inherits a context safety grant it never earned (XSS)

GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for djust. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.

source listedactiveGHSA-xjw9-38cr-6372

This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.

01 / Meaning

Why it matters

Published affected context helps an owner decide what evidence to gather. This report has not examined your application.

02 / Applicability

The affected context

Affected versions, configuration prerequisites and known exclusions are public. Confirm each one against the deployed service.

  • <= 1.1.1

A context safety grant was inherited by a template **binding** that never earned it, so rebinding a name the view had marked safe left the mark attached to the new, attacker-controlled value. djust's context safety channel is keyed by **name**, not by value. Every bind copied the value and left the grant in place: ``` view marks p = mark_safe('trusted') template {% with p=user_input %}{{ p }}{% endwith %} djust '' <- executes django '<img src=x onerror=alert(1)>' ``` ## Affected binds Eight distinct shapes were live. All are fixed in 1.1.2: | shape | example | |---|---| | `{% with %}` rebinding a marked name | `{% with p=hostile %}{{ p }}{% endwith %}` | | `{% with %}` **descendant** of a rebound name | `{% with p=hostile %}{{ p.a }}{% endwith %}` | | `{% with %}` binding over a marked name | `{% with q=hostile %}{{ q }}{% endwith %}` | | `{% for %}` loop variable | `{% for p in hostiles %}{{ p }}{% endfor %}` | | `{% for %}` descendant | `{% for p in hostiles %}{{ p.a }}{% endfor %}` | | `{% for %}` tuple unpacking | `{% for k, v in rows %}{{ v }}{% endfor %}` | | `{% include … with %}` | `{% include "c.html" wit

03 / Response

What to do next

  1. investigate

    Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.

    Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. GitHub Advisory Database

A fixed release is not deployment evidence.

Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
