Scriban has Uncontrolled Recursion in `object.to_json` Causing Unrecoverable Process Crash via StackOverflowException

GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for Scriban, Scriban.Signed. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.

This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.

01 / Meaning

Why it matters

Published affected context helps an owner decide what evidence to gather. This report has not examined your application.

CVSS

7.5 high

GitHub source severity; exploitability and local consequence require separate evidence.

## Summary The `object.to_json` builtin function in Scriban performs recursive JSON serialization via an internal `WriteValue()` static local function that has no depth limit, no circular reference detection, and no stack overflow guard. A Scriban template containing a self-referencing object passed to `object.to_json` triggers unbounded recursion, causing a `StackOverflowException` that terminates the hosting .NET process. This is a fatal, unrecoverable crash — `StackOverflowException` cannot be caught by user code in .NET. ## Details The vulnerable code is the `WriteValue()` static local function at `src/Scriban/Functions/ObjectFunctions.cs:494`: ```csharp static void WriteValue(TemplateContext context, Utf8JsonWriter writer, object value) { var type = value?.GetType() ?? typeof(object); if (value is null || value is string || value is bool || type.IsPrimitiveOrDecimal() || value is IFormattable) { JsonSerializer.Serialize(writer, value, type); } else if (value is IList || type.IsArray) { writer.WriteStartArray(); foreach (var x in context.ToList(context.CurrentSpan, value)) { WriteValue(context, writer,

03 / Response

What to do next

  1. investigate

Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.

Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. GitHub Advisory Database

A fixed release is not deployment evidence.

Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
