pnpm: `patch-remove` could delete project-selected files outside the patches directory
GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for pnpm, pnpm. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.
01 / Meaning
Why it matters
Published affected context helps an owner decide what evidence to gather. This report has not examined your application.
7.1 high
GitHub source severity; exploitability and local consequence require separate evidence.

## Summary The `patch-remove` deletion-scope issue tracked as GHSA-72r4-9c5j-mj57 / CAND-PNPM-030 has been addressed in pnpm. A crafted patch entry could resolve outside the configured patches directory and cause `pnpm patch-remove` to delete an arbitrary reachable file. This patch validates the configured directory and every resolved target before unlinking anything, then deletes the final directory entry without following it. ## Security boundary - Traversal and absolute paths that resolve outside the configured patches directory are rejected before deletion. - Parent directories are canonicalized before deletion, including the case where a nested symlink points outside and the final outside entry is itself dangling. - The complete batch is validated before any file is removed. - Component-aware predicates accept valid names beginning with `..` while still rejecting parent traversal, Windows drive escapes, and UNC escapes. - Valid files and symlinked patch directories whose canonical targets remain below the lockfile directory continue to work. - A final symlink inside a valid patch directory is unlinked without following its target, including when the target is outside or da

03 / Response
What to do next
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. GitHub Advisory Database
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
