Mistune Heading ID Attribute has Injection XSS
GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for mistune. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.
01 / Meaning
Why it matters
Published affected context helps an owner decide what evidence to gather. This report has not examined your application.

## Summary `HTMLRenderer.heading()` builds the opening `` tag by string-concatenating the `id` attribute value directly into the HTML — with no call to `escape()`, `safe_entity()`, or any other sanitisation function. A double-quote character `"` in the `id` value terminates the attribute, allowing an attacker to inject arbitrary additional attributes (event handlers, `src=`, `href=`, etc.) into the heading element. The default TOC hook assigns safe auto-incremented IDs (`toc_1`, `toc_2`, …) that never contain user text. However, the `add_toc_hook()` API accepts a caller-supplied `heading_id` callback. Deriving heading IDs from the heading text itself — to produce human-readable slug anchors like `#installation` or `#getting-started` — is by far the most common real-world usage of this callback (every major documentation generator does this). When the callback returns raw heading text, an attacker who controls heading content can break out of the `id=` attribute. ## Details **File:** `src/mistune/renderers/html.py` ```python def heading(self, text: str, level: int, **attrs: Any) -> str: tag = "h" + str(level) html = "<" + tag _id = attrs.get("id") if _id:

What to do next
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. GitHub Advisory Database
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.

- Customer inventory, deployment, reachability and exploitation have not been inspected.
05 / Provenance
Sources you can inspect
Each assertion retains its source. Mirrored records may repeat one underlying publisher; additional links are not independent corroboration.
