BoxLite has a Timeout Bypass Vulnerability
GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for boxlite. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.

#### Summary BoxLite is a sandbox service that allows users to create lightweight virtual machines (Boxes) and run OCI containers within them. BoxLite allows users to configure a timeout for services running inside the virtual machine. When the timeout is triggered, BoxLite sends a signal to kill the process. However, instead of using the uncatchable SIGKILL signal, BoxLite uses the catchable SIGALRM signal. Malicious code running inside the sandbox can exploit this vulnerability to continue running after the timeout is triggered, leading to resource exhaustion within the virtual machine and affecting the availability of the BoxLite service. #### Details 1. ExecRequest with timeout_ms arrives at Execution service **File:** `guest/src/service/exec/mod.rs` **Function:** `spawn_execution()` (line 315) **Code:** ```rust // Step 3: Start timeout watcher (if requested) if req.timeout_ms > 0 { timeout::start_timeout_watcher( state, execution_id.clone(), std::time::Duration::from_millis(req.timeout_ms), ); } ``` **Issue:** Any nonzero `timeout_ms` triggers the timeout watcher. The host expects this to kill the process after the specified duration. 2.
03 / Response
What to do next
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. GitHub Advisory Database
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.
