Yamcs Vulnerable to Remote Code Execution via Mission Database algorithm override
GitHub lists this reviewed advisory for org.yamcs:yamcs-core. Published version ranges and source prerequisites are shown below; this is not an inspection of a visitor’s application.
This report has not inspected your inventory, configuration, deployed build, reachability or evidence. A catalog listing and a severity score do not establish exposure or compromise.

# Remote Code Execution via Mission Database algorithm override ## Summary The Nashorn `ScriptEngine` used to evaluate user-supplied algorithm text in `MdbOverrideApi.updateAlgorithm` is constructed without a `ClassFilter`, allowing a user with the `ChangeMissionDatabase` privilege to execute arbitrary Java code on the Yamcs server. In Yamcs's default configuration (no `security.yaml`), the built-in `guest` user has `superuser=true`, so the vulnerability is reachable without authentication. ## Details **Vulnerable file**: `yamcs-core/src/main/java/org/yamcs/algorithms/ScriptAlgorithmExecutorFactory.java` ```java // L46-53 Nashorn engine obtained without a ClassFilter ScriptEngineFactory factory = scriptEngineManager.getEngineFactories().stream() .filter(candidate -> !JDK_BUILTIN_NASHORN_ENGINE_NAME.equals(candidate.getEngineName()) && candidate.getNames().contains(language)) .findFirst().orElse(null); if (factory != null) { scriptEngine = factory.getScriptEngine(); // ← ClassFilter not supplied } // L109 user-supplied algorithm text reaches eval() scriptEngine.eval(functionScript); ``` `NashornScriptEngineFactory.getScriptEngine
03 / Response
What to do next
- investigate
Identify the exact component and deployed version, examine the linked publisher’s conditions, and retain evidence of any mitigation.
Confirm current vendor support, compatibility and deployment evidence. This report has not tested a fix in your system. GitHub Advisory Database
A fixed release is not deployment evidence.
Check current vendor support and compatibility. After making a change, verify the deployed build and relevant runtime conditions. Keep the evidence, owner and time. An updated lockfile alone does not prove what is running.

- Customer inventory, deployment, reachability and exploitation have not been inspected.
05 / Provenance
Sources you can inspect
Each assertion retains its source. Mirrored records may repeat one underlying publisher; additional links are not independent corroboration.
